Past Events

4/35/2012 TOM (Transforming Outpatient Medicine) Talks: Innovations in Primary Care
TOM (Transforming Outpatient Medicine) is a series of fast paced, inspirational talks from leaders in the field of primary care. Inspired by TOM Talks at UCSF, which follows a format similar to that of the TED Talks, the Georgetown PCP invited speakers who are engaging and knowledgeable in the field for a panel discussion on innovative practices across different disciplines.
More details about the event can be found on our facebook event page!

2/29/2012 Journal Club: “Innovation in Primary Care--Staying One Step Ahead of Burnout”
This week’s journal club will be discussing burnout among physicians and the innovative ways they are combating this issue. The article from NEJM covers methods such as group sessions, consultations through email, and a greater focus on preventive medicine, and how they might help overworked primary care physicians.

12/7/2011 Journal Club: “Putting Patients at the Center of the Medical Home”
As a follow-up of our previous discussion on new ways of delivering primary care, this week's journal club examines patient-centered medical homes. We will be discussing an article from the New York Times featuring research on a new strategy that is currently in use to adapt family medicine practices to "better suit the needs of patients"--patient-centered medical homes.

11/16/2011 Journal Club: “Primary Care, Everywhere: Connecting the Dots across the Emerging Health Landscape”
This week's journal club features new, nontraditional ways of delivering healthcare to primary care patients, who seek out more convenient and affordable ways to address their health concerns. We will be discussing a paper by the California Healthcare Foundations, and paying special attention to sections on retail clinics, home as the new medical home, and telehealth and mobile care.

4/1/2011 Journal Club: “18 Stethoscopes, 1 Heart Murmur and Many Missed Connections”
This week's journal club zooms in on the cornerstone of medical practice--doctor-patient interaction. Inspired by the New York Times article, we will be discussing the mismatch between how providers and recipients view medical conditions, as well as how well medical school curriculum prepares students for real-life scenarios.

2/22/2011 The Changing Face of Primary Care
Interested in primary care? Curious about how primary care fits into our healthcare system? Want to hear first hand what it’s like to work in primary care, and how it relates to public health and preventive medicine? Prominent and passionate members of the Georgetown primary care community will discuss their experiences in medicine! Panelists include:
Dr. Marghuerite Duane: Medical Director, Spanish Catholic Center of Catholic Charities
Dr. Jeff Weinfeld: Associate Professor at Georgetown’s Family Medicine department, and a practicing physician

Description:
PCP@Georgetown was started in September 2010 by a group of undergraduates that shared a common interest in learning about primary care. Our goal is to increase awareness about issues in primary care and provide real opportunities to get involved at the undergraduate level. On campus, we organize talks given by primary care leaders and create exciting research and volunteer opportunities at local clinics. We also run a monthly journal club moderated by a doctor at the Georgetown School of Medicine to discuss issues in healthcare and especially in primary care. Though primarily composed of undergrads, the Georgetown Chapter is also open to medical students/other trainees, residents, and clinicians.

PCP@Georgetown is also very invested in creating exciting opportunities for trainees to get a taste of the innovating ideas clinics are employing to improve patient care.
